Prenatal Yoga Pose: Butterfly

Butterfly {Sanskrit: Baddha Konasana}. A perfect way to calm the mind, open up the hips and relax the inner thigh muscles.

Step by Step:

Sit on a folded blanket or pillow if your hips or groins are tight. Bend your knees, pull your heels toward your body with the soles of your feet together, then drop your knees out to the sides. Never force your knees down.

Lengthen your spine and relax your shoulders down your back. Take your gaze either in front of you or down towards your feet.

Stay here for a few breaths.  If your body allows it, exhale and slowly begin to fold forward drawing your torso towards your legs. Keep your breath flowing naturally and try to maintain a straight spine.

As you inhale gently raise your torso back up and lift your knees away from the floor.

About Thea Mistry:
Thea is a certified Hatha yoga teacher and birth doula, who is passionate about supporting women as they rise to the challenges of pregnancy, birth and motherhood. In 2009, she completed her Dru Yoga Teacher Training while living in the UK, and was blessed that winter to do a Hatha Teacher Training in Rishikesh, India. Upon returning to Canada, she studied prenatal yoga with Sasha Padron and Yoga 4 Kids with Sherry LeBlanc.

Her own experience of pregnancy and birth inspired her to focus on offering yoga that empowers women throughout the process of becoming mothers. Her pre/postnatal yoga classes balance nurturing with strengthening in a playful flow of asana. She strives to create a space where women can come together to share their experiences, form new friendships, bond with their babies/partners, and seize a moment for themselves.

Thea teaches with a contagious joy and seeks to move her students to shine their light on the world.

True or False: Heartburn in pregnancy equals a newborn baby with a full hear of hair.

True!

Researchers at Johns Hopkins hospital in Baltimore found  a correlation between heartburn and the hairiness of a newborn actually exists.  According to an article in Fit Pregnancy magazine "When pregnant women reported moderate heartburn, they had hairy newborns 82 percent of the time; the majority of heartburn-free women gave birth to bald babies."

It's all about the hormones of course.  Researchers are concluding that the pregnancy hormones which play a role in prenatal hair growth (estrogen and progesterone), also relax the muscles at the bottom of the mother's esophagus and cause gastric reflux, aka heartburn.
