Snowman on a Stick

A healthy snack and a fun holiday activity for kids.

What you'll need

  • Bananas
  • Grapes
  • Carrot
  • Apple
  • Bamboo skewers
  • Mini chocolate chips
  • Pretzel sticks
(Tip: Swap out the chocolate chips with fresh blueberries for an even healthier treat!)

How to make it

  1. For each snowman, you will need three thick slices of banana, a grape, a sliver of carrot, and a triangular piece of apple. (Tip: Poke a hole in the apple piece with a bamboo skewer first to make assembly easier.) Have your kids slide the fruit onto the skewer, then use the carrot slivers for noses, mini chocolate chips for eyes and buttons, and pretzel sticks for arms.

Welcome Meg Watkins - Yoga Instructor

Toronto Yoga Mamas is thrilled to welcome yoga instructor Meg Watkins to the team!

Meg Watkins - Toronto Yoga Mamas

Meg will be teaching the Candlelight Yoga class every Tuesday night at 7pm.  This class is open to anyone to enjoy (not prenatal specific) and is the perfect class to unwind and relax in after a hectic day.

Meg Watkins is an eternal optimist, a slow-food enthusiast, a daydreamer, and a heart follower. A long time yogini, Meg started out dabbling in yoga in her teens, loving the way breathing through a yoga class cleared her head, and how the poses made her feel lighter and more grounded at the same time. She got serious about yoga in 2009 when she took a class with a teacher whose wisdom, confidence, and light were infinitely inspiring, and she resolved to be the same type of teacher for others.

Meg completed her 200hr yoga teacher training in 2012 at Tula Central in Toronto, and has been happily spreading the love and playfulness of yoga through her Vinyasa, Hatha flow, and Prenatal classes ever since.

5 Ways To Keep Baby's Skin Healthy This Winter

Winter Skin Care For Baby

By: Christie Chuakay,
Kids Yoga Instructor and Executive District Manager, Arbonne International

It's good to get out of the house in the cold weather for some fresh air, but your baby's skin is thin and especially sensitive to temperature changes. Here are some tips to help prepare and protect your baby's skin from the upcoming winter season.

Rub a Dub:
Try to limit bath time to 10 minutes and ensure the water is lukewarm temperature. Apply a gentle, mild and tear-free cleanser to their delicate skin and hair.

Soak It Up:
After bath time, make sure to apply an unscented moisturizer on your baby's skin within two minutes of their bath to soften and condition the skin and help reduce redness and irritation.

Function or Fashion:
Though tempting to buy all those beautiful baby clothes you stroll by...try to stick to natural fabrics rather than synthetic (as much as possible). The natural fibres allow your baby's skin to "breathe" and help prevent them from sweating, which can irritate their skin.

Watch The Booty:
While on the topic of clothes, by bundling our babies in extra layers during the winter their bottoms become more vulnerable to sweat which can lead to rashes.  Use a good diaper cream that protects your baby's skin from friction and moisture.

Limit The Rays:
The sun is still out in the winter! Don't forget to apply sunscreen even in the -20 degree temperature, UV rays are still strong. If baby is too young for sunscreen, keep them well covered.

Top 5 Reasons for Prenatal Massage

By: Natalie Amell RMT, Restore Integrative Health
Massage has been used for centuries to improve overall health, reduce stress, improve circulation and mobility, and relieve muscle tension.
Prenatal massage shares many of the goals of regular massage - but it's tailored specifically to the needs of pregnant women and their changing bodies.  Therapists who are trained in prenatal massage adjust their techniques accordingly.
Natalie Amell from Restore Integrative Health in Leslieville is a fantastic registered massage therapist offering prenatal massage to the mamas in Toronto.  Below are her top five benefits for prenatal massage.

1.  Your centre of balance shifts as the baby grows.  Suddenly different leg and back muscles are sore from the rapid change in posture
2.  Sleeping positions change during pregnancy causing aches and pains in neck/shoulder and lower back
3.  A hormone called relaxin is released during pregnancy.  It loosens the joints to prepare the pelvis for pregnancy but it affects the whole body.  Muscles tighten up to help support these looser joints.
4.  Swelling in the extremities is common in pregnancy - manual lymph drainage can help reduce the swelling and ease the accompanying discomfort.
5.  Pregnancy is a big life changer.  Even if it was planned and you’re ready for all that it brings, pregnancy can be a stressful and anxious time.  Massage can provide relaxation and bring a sense of calm to help manage all of life’s big changes.

Prenatal Yoga Pose: Butterfly

Butterfly {Sanskrit: Baddha Konasana}. A perfect way to calm the mind, open up the hips and relax the inner thigh muscles.

Step by Step:

Sit on a folded blanket or pillow if your hips or groins are tight. Bend your knees, pull your heels toward your body with the soles of your feet together, then drop your knees out to the sides. Never force your knees down.

Lengthen your spine and relax your shoulders down your back. Take your gaze either in front of you or down towards your feet.

Stay here for a few breaths.  If your body allows it, exhale and slowly begin to fold forward drawing your torso towards your legs. Keep your breath flowing naturally and try to maintain a straight spine.

As you inhale gently raise your torso back up and lift your knees away from the floor.

Upon returning to Canada, she studied prenatal yoga with Sasha Padron and Yoga 4 Kids with Sherry LeBlanc.

Her own experience of pregnancy and birth inspired her to focus on offering yoga that empowers women throughout the process of becoming mothers. Her pre/postnatal yoga classes balance nurturing with strengthening in a playful flow of asana. She strives to create a space where women can come together to share their experiences, form new friendships, bond with their babies/partners, and seize a moment for themselves.
